The first time I read about kegel exercises, it was in Stephen Colbert’s book, I Am America (And So Can You)!

I was intrigued, if not almost disturbed by these implications. Seriously, you can exercise the muscles down there? In lieu of this recent discovery, I spent some time searching for the perfect kegel exerciser. There were too many different sizes, colours, and shapes to decide. That’s when Je Joue released their newest set, the Ami.
The first thing that drew me to Ami was that the set contains three different PC exercisers. Ami I is the largest and lightest of the three, listed at 47 g and 36 mm. It consists of one ball inside a soft silicone outer shell, complete with silicone retrieval cord. Ami II is slightly smaller and heavier, weighing in at 78 g and a diameter of 36mm. The Ami III is the smallest and heaviest piece at 106 g and 28 mm. Je Joue recommends beginning with the I and working your way up to III as your PC muscles become stronger.
I’ve taken a more personal route with mine. After getting a good amount of water-based lube ready (don’t use silicone, it will damage the shell and cord) I laid down on my bed, relaxed, and prepared to insert Ami I. I couldn’t do it. I tried using more lube, standing, sitting, and crouching and I just couldn’t get the damn thing in. After a few more tries, I’ve decided it’s just not going to happen. Possible reasons? I haven’t had intercourse yet or worked up to any larger toys, so I’m assuming that my vagina is just too tight at the opening to accommodate the large diameter of I.
However, after giving up and moving on to II….success! I inserted it just past my public bone, and breathed a sigh of relief as it slid into place. As I walked around my room, typed up a few things at my computer, and tried some jumping jacks, I could tell that II was inside me but it was a nice, full sensation. I even felt the balls jingle around as I ran down the stairs to grab a soda. The next time I used Ami II, I had the courage to go to dinner with some friends and even attend a staff meeting. It felt so naughty to be carrying the balls around inside me, and I checked myself a few times to make sure I wasn’t walking strangely. Finally a few days later I tried the Ami III. My first run through my muscles just couldn’t keep the heavier weight inside my vagina, but I finally took them for a spin without losing my grip.
All three pieces of the set have a silicone retrieval cord for removal. I found the cord extremely stretchy and secure, though I was paranoid about pulling it too hard. I wasn’t quite prepared for the popping feeling the balls had as I pulled them out! My experiences with Ami II and III were fantastic, and I can already feel my PC muscles growing stronger with a combination of wear during daily activities and intentional exercise.
The set comes packaged in a simplistic purple box with Je Joue printed on the outside, as well as some basic specs of the product on a side panel. Inside is a sturdy black cardboard box, also stamped “Je Joue” and tied up with a nice satin ribbon. The three Amis are nestled safely inside a plastic insert which can be easily pulled out to reveal a booklet with care instructions and sample exercises.
The outer shell of Ami is made of non-porous silicone with a plastic guard at the base of the retrieval cord. This makes them relatively easy to clean since they can be washed with soap and water or disinfected with a 10% bleach solution. The instructions also say you can boil Ami, but only for a few seconds since the plastic could react badly to heat. The hardest part of cleaning Ami is that fluids tend to get stuck in the edge of the plastic guard, so you need to be sure and get into that crevice. I usually use my nails to help me out.
I would recommend this set to absolutely anyone who is interested in trying out some kegel exercises. Having three products in one makes Ami a great value, and I think women of any skill level would get great use out of at least two of these exercisers. I was a little disappointed that I’m unable to use Ami I, as I believe that it would have the most noticeable ‘jingle’ of the ball inside the shell. Maybe this means I’m on my way to a ‘death grip’ after all! Ami is a great tool for those with weak muscles as a result of aging or pregnancy, but also for anyone who wants to increase their muscle strength and possibly reach more intense orgasms. Kegels are for boys, too, silly. Learned that a few years ago during #1 pregnancy. And, don’t listen to Colbert.
