Have you ever tried to enjoy a kinky scene while blindfolded by a Continental Airlines sleep mask? It’s not the most ridiculous thing in the world, but it’s not all that fun either (unless you’ve got some humiliation play goin’ on). Unfortunately, this is what I’ve been doing for the past year or so. It’s not that I didn’t want a real blindfold, it’s just that I hadn’t found one I particularly liked. I was like Goldilocks; one was too big, another too hard. I could see underneath a few of them.
When FunWares sent me Kinklab’s Leather Padded Blindfold, I found my perfect bowl of porridge.
Everything about this blindfold is simple, but effective. It arrived packaged in a plastic tube reminiscent of those pneumatic tubes at bank drive-thrus. A paper insert inside shows a rather attractive woman (from the shoulders-up) wearing the blindfold. It also has a short description of the blindfold in English, Spanish, German, French, and Japanese. Apparently the blindfold is available in black or red, but I only saw the black version at FunWares. The fine print also mentions that the entire thing was designed, assembled, and packaged in the US. That’s pretty nice. The tube can be used for some great storage (especially with the insert removed), but it’s pretty large compared to the blindfold. I’d suggest storing a couple of vibrators in it instead.
I had a bit of trouble at first opening the tube. There’s a black end cap with a small rope loop on the top; pulling the loop resulted in me ripping the loop out of the cap but nothing else. Damn, this thing is sealed tightly! I ended up squeezing the tube into an oval shape and prying the top off with my fingers.
I was immediately surprised as the smell of leather wafted to my nose. Mmmmm. I’m always a bit wary of “leather” items, but this is genuinely wonderful-smelling leather. The blindfold itself is constructed really well. The outside is a sheet of very firm leather, neatly stitched to a much softer and thinner leather sheet on the inside. Between these two layers appears to be some sort of padding that runs all the way around the edges where the blindfold sits against the cheekbones and brow of the face. The entire blindfold is very pliable and bendable to adjust to any face shape. A stretchy fabric band is used to keep the blindfold on. This appears to be glued between the two stitched layers of leather; I tugged on it quite a bit and although the glue stretches and appears to pull away from the surface, the stitching of the layers keeps this tight and securely attached.
I was genuinely excited by the great construction of the Kinklab blindfold, but wearing it was the real test. I couldn’t believe how comfortable it is! The padding feels like it’s in all the right places and I don’t feel any weird pressure on my face. The stretchy band also works great to make this a one-size-fits-all product – I think the only people for which this wouldn’t fit are small children (with whom you should NOT be using this anyway, folks). The blackout effect is also quite noticeable. When wearing this blindfold, all I can see is a tiny sliver on the left side of my nose. It’s grey, fuzzy, and completely indistinguishable. This was a great contrast to many more-expensive blindfolds I’ve tried on that allowed me to have full function of sight around my nose.
