Is Sexting Cheating?

In my frustration at my recent writer’s block, I discovered a page on LiveJournal with some great writing prompts. Along with those already posted at EdenBloggers, I’m going to try and get back into the swing of writing something every couple of days (at the very least). Hopefully you all will find these more insightful than annoying, and as always I invite you to comment with any of your thoughts or opinions (whether contrary or in agreement) to what I have to say.

Today’s Prompt: I recently discovered what has been called ‘sexting’; the sending of saucy text messages. A work collegue who I’ve had a crush on for some time, introduced me to this. I have a partner of 8 months, and I’m confused as to whether these sexts can be classed as cheating.

In your views, does sexting count as cheating?

Yes. I truly, honestly do not understand how anyone can think differently. If you are in an agreed-upon monogamous relationship with a partner and you decide to send sexy text messages to another party without your partner knowing about it, then yeah. You’re in deep shit, my friend. This is something called emotional cheating.

Just because you aren’t actually sucking your co-worker’s dick or rolling in the sheets with them doesn’t mean that you aren’t hurting your partner. The hurt is still the same when a loved one lies or withholds important information that directly contradicts the agreed-upon arrangements of your relationship.

Besides, sexting and other such cheating mechanisms can often lead to more. The “newlywed” feeling of love may creep up on you and suddenly you’ll find you enjoy sexting with guy #2 more than you enjoy a rough-and-tumble with your significant other. Before you know it, everything spirals out of control.

Take my advice – if you have to ask whether something ‘counts’ as cheating, it probably does. Either way, you wouldn’t be asking unless you were feeling guilty and hiding said thing from your partner. All bad. So just don’t do it.
